Language packs

ContactAttic in your language

ContactAttic 1.1.0 and later includes every language below and opens in your Windows language the first time you run it. A language pack is for a language that is not built in yet, or for a newer translation before the next update. A pack is one small text file. ContactAttic never goes online to fetch one: you download it here and install it from inside the app.

How to install a pack

Open the Language screen: in ContactAttic, click the globe button at the top right of the window. The screen has three numbered buttons, and the steps below carry the same numbers, so they can be followed even while the app is still in English.

Top right of the ContactAttic window. The globe button opens the Language screen.
  1. 1Download the pack for your language. On this page, use the button on your language’s tile above. In the app, link 1 at the top of the Language screen opens this page. The pack is a plain text file ending in .lang; save it anywhere, for example your Downloads folder.
  2. 2Click button 2, Install language pack…, and pick the file you downloaded.
  3. 3Click button 3, Use this language. The window switches at once, no restart. The same screen switches back to English, or to any other language, at any time.

A pack can never break the app. Any phrase a pack does not cover simply shows in English, so a pack from today keeps working with next year’s ContactAttic, and a newer pack works in an older ContactAttic. Packs need ContactAttic 1.1.0 or later, the first version with the globe button.

Why a file, not a download inside the app?

ContactAttic’s promise is that nothing leaves your computer and nothing comes in behind your back. Fetching language files from the internet would mean the app talks to a server, and we would rather it never did. So the pack is a file you download in your browser, exactly like the installer, and the app only ever reads it from disk. A pack can also travel by USB stick or email to a computer that is kept offline.

Want another language?

A pack is a readable text file with one line per phrase, so adding a language is a translation job, not a programming job. If you would like ContactAttic in a language that is not listed, or you spot a phrase that could be said better, write to hello@ContactAttic.com.
