Using ContactAttic

ContactAttic gathers the address books you've exported or backed up and merges them into one clean, de-duplicated set of contacts on your own computer. It never logs into your accounts and nothing is ever uploaded.

What it reads

ContactAttic imports vCard files (.vcf) and contact CSV files (.csv) — between them the export format of iCloud, Google Contacts, Outlook and most phones. Add either kind and ContactAttic picks the right reader automatically.

To export a vCard: on iPhone/iCloud, select contacts and Share/Export vCard; in Google Contacts, Export → vCard; in Outlook, export as vCard.

To export a CSV: in Google Contacts, Export → Google CSV; in Outlook, export contacts as CSV. ContactAttic reads both the Google and Outlook column layouts, keeping every email and phone number on each contact. Save the file, then add it here.

Password-protected zip, 7z and rar archives are opened too — ContactAttic asks for the password, says if it did not work, and lets you try again or skip the archive. Tick “Apply to all remaining protected archives” to answer once — a password or a skip — for every protected archive the scan still meets.

How the merge works

The same person usually appears in several address books with different details. ContactAttic treats two entries as the same person when they share an email or a phone number (ignoring formatting and country code), and merges them — keeping every email and phone, and the fuller name and organisation. Different people stay separate.

How to build your address book

Add your exported files (or a folder full of them), choose where the archive should go, and click Build my address book. You get a clean contacts.vcf you can re-import anywhere, plus a structured contacts.jsonl.

Runs add, never duplicate

Point a later run at the same archive folder to fold in newly-found exports. ContactAttic re-merges everything, so re-importing an overlapping backup changes nothing and never creates duplicates.

You can stop a run at any time with the Cancel button — it stops before writing, so your address book is left exactly as it was.

Folders Windows won't let it read

Every Windows drive has a few folders the system keeps to itself, such as $Recycle.Bin and System Volume Information. Nothing can read them, ContactAttic included.

If you point a run at a whole drive it steps over those folders and carries on, then says in the run log how many it had to skip. The line is there so a smaller number of contacts than you expected is explained rather than mysterious.

A folder you own but have locked down with permissions is counted the same way. If the number looks high, check the log for which folders they were.

Trial and license

The free trial is the full app but keeps up to a few hundred people so you can see it work on your own contacts. To remove the limit, click Enter license and paste the license from your purchase email.

One license can cover several apps in the Attic family (ContactAttic, EmailAttic, and so on) — a suite or bundle key unlocks each app it lists. A key that doesn't include ContactAttic won't unlock this app; it stays in trial.

Languages

ContactAttic is in English, Deutsch, Français, Español, Português and 日本語, and opens in the language your computer uses. The globe button at the top right of the main window switches language at any time; the window changes on the spot. Other languages arrive as free language packs: a small plain-text file from ContactAttic.com/languages. On the Language screen, link 1 opens that page, button 2 installs a downloaded pack, button 3 switches to it. ContactAttic never connects to the internet to fetch one.

Privacy

ContactAttic never connects to the internet to move your contacts. All reading, merging and writing happens locally. Your export files are opened read-only and are never modified.
